Your email list could be the biggest source of income for your business. People have built million-dollar businesses by leveraging their email lists. If you want to be one of them, you need to start building an email list of your visitors.

As you probably know, building an email list is easier said than done. Most common list building techniques are considered annoying. Luckily, there are a few methods like using well-structured popups which are still effective for collecting email addresses.

While there are several popup creator plugins for WordPress, only a few stands out with all the necessary options for customizing the content and flexible display options.

Among them, PopupAlly Pro is a leading choice. In today’s post, I will introduce you to this popup creator plugin and explain why and how you have to use this plugin.

WordPress PopupAlly Pro Plugin

Once you install and activate the plugin, it will create a new menu item titled ‘PopupAlly Pro‘ in your WordPress dashboard. Clicking on that menu item will prompt you to provide the email address and license key. Once you provide these details, you can get started with the plugin.

The plugin interface is divided into several sections. To create a popup, you have to go through the first two sections. However, I will go through all these sections one by one. Let’s start with the first section.

#1. Display Settings

This is the first section which comes up when you click the ‘PopupAlly Pro‘ menu. By default, the plugin comes with a demo popup. You can rename the popup by clicking on the pencil icon. Click on the popup name to open the customization options.

First of all, you can choose the type of the popup. There are three options –

  1. Exit-Intent PopUp – If you want to get more subscribers, you should choose the Exit-intent popup. According to expert recommendations, using different designs for different pages will provide best results for the exit-intent popups.
  2. Scroll PopUp – The scroll popup could be used to trigger the popup once the user has scrolled through a specific percentage of the page. It is also possible to display the scroll popup when a specified selector is visible. This is the most popular type of popup used by leading bloggers.
  3. Time-delayed PopUp – The time-delayed popup could be displayed after a specified period. When using this popup, you need to find out the ideal time when your visitors convert the best.

Another option to display the popup is using the click-to-open feature. If you choose the option, you can define the element which should be clicked to open the popup.

It is also possible to embed the popup directly into the page. For this option, you can choose to display the popup in any of the pre-defined locations or use the shortcodes to display it wherever you want.

For each of these popup types, the ‘Advanced Options‘ area allows you to control how quickly the popup should be displayed. It is possible to define the fade-in period for the popup. Then, there is the option to choose where the popup should be displayed. You can opt to show the popup on all posts and pages, or select specific posts and pages.

If you want to disable the popup on mobile devices or desktop computers, you will find the options below. It is also possible to define how often the popup should be displayed.

Thanks to the handy ‘Smart Subscriber Recognition‘ feature, you can disable the popup for your subscribers. To do this, you have to use custom utm_source tags for the links which will be sent to your customers. The popups will not be displayed on the pages with these tags.

Lastly, there is a separate option to define the action once the visitor has subscribed. Available actions include displaying a ‘Thank You‘ page, thank you popup, etc.

#2. Style Settings

As the name suggests, this section allows you to customize the available style settings for the popups. In the ‘Information Destination‘ field, you can choose the destination of the subscriber information.

It is possible to send the information to an email system or specific email address(es). If you want to send the details to an email address, you can provide the address(es) in the following field. Next, there is a field to paste the sign-up HTML code from your email platform.

You can choose the email template from the ‘Popup Template‘ area. Choosing ‘Fluid Templates’ will provide a list of the available designs. Depending on your requirement, you can choose other options like Tried-and-true, Express Yourself, Simple Choice, Limitless, Edge to Edge, Three Musketeers, etc.

By default, the popup is displayed in an overlay which puts the primary focus on the popup. You can customize the overlay settings from the ‘Popup background overlay options‘ area. If you want to disable the overlay, choose ‘Yes‘ on the ‘Do not show background overlay‘ option.

In the ‘Screen Background Overlay‘ option, you can choose the color and opacity for the background layer. If you choose ‘Yes‘ for ‘Ignore clicks on Screen Background‘, visitors have to click on the cross icon to close the popup.

Customization elements‘ area shows a preview of the popup. There will be different tabs for various devices like desktop, tablet, large phone, small phone, etc. You can click on any tab to check out how the popup looks on that device. It is also possible to add new devices and choose custom breaking points.

You will find the necessary customization options right after the popup preview. While the available options vary depending on your chosen template, the ‘Popup options‘ will always be there. This area allows you to customize options like the popup location, background color, background image, outer border, popup width, height, etc.

For the text fields, you will find the common options like changing the text, defining the width, height, color, font, font size, text alignment, etc. It is also possible to choose an action for clicks on the text.

Available actions include going to another page, opening a page in a new window, opening a popup, etc. It is also possible to copy, delete, move up or move down any element.

As you make the changes, these will be applied immediately and displayed in the live preview. After you have done the necessary changes, click ‘Save Changes‘ and check your website to make sure the popup shown in an intended way.

#3. Opt-in Statistics

This section displays detailed statistics about the performance of your popups. For each popup, you can view the conversion rate, number of view or number of opt-ins. These stats could be displayed for the desktop visitors, mobile visitors or all visitors.

Click on any popup to display the stats. This will show you the relevant data for today, each of the last seven days and the all-time data. You can download this data as a CSV file.

#4. Performing Split Tests

PopupAlly Pro comes with all the necessary options for creating and managing split tests for your popups. To get started, head towards the ‘Split Test‘ section and click on the ‘New Split Test‘ button.

Provide a name and click on the name to open the editing options.

First of all, change the ‘Test status‘ to ‘Running‘. Your variations will be listed in the ‘Design and Test Weight‘ area. While an initial variation will be created automatically, you need to choose the popup for that variation.

You can add new variations by clicking the ‘Add Variate’ button. For each variation, you can choose different popups and set the weight for them.

Once you continue the split test for a few days, you will be able to find the results at the ‘Overall Result‘ and ‘Detailed Results‘ areas below. It is also possible to continue multiple split tests at the same time. You can create a new split test by clicking the ‘New Split Test‘ button and configuring the options as I discussed here.
